Government provides funding for 41 mental health projects

The government has confirmed a number of projects that will receive a share of its 15 million pound mental health improvement fund.

A total of 41 projects aimed at improving the provision of mental health places of safety will receive a share of the funding pot, with the aim of ensuring that people experiencing a mental health crisis who have committed no crime are not placed in police cells.

The first wave of bids, totalling 6.1 million pounds, have been awarded to 15 NHS trusts and partnership organisations covering 11 police force areas. They have been focused where use of police cells as a place of safety has previously been among the highest in the country.

Projects include new section 136 suites, crisis cafes, triage vehicles and places of safety for children and young people, with the bidding process for the remaining 8.9 million pounds of funding now open to the rest of England.

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt said: "We are fully committed to improving mental health services across the country and these projects will help support people at a crucial time."

The aim is to bring an end people in crisis being locked up in police cells when health services are not available in time.
