Government to consider evidence for national calorie reduction plan
The government has launched an assessment on the current evidence on children's calorie consumption as part of the next phase of its childhood obesity plan.
Public Health England is looking to set ambitions for a calorie reduction programme that will remove excess calories from the foods children consume most frequently, including ready meals, pizzas, burgers, savoury snacks and sandwiches.
This aims to tackle trends that have resulted in one in three children being either overweight or obese by the time they leave primary school, with youngsters from disadvantaged backgrounds more likely to be affected.
Evidence will be published in early 2018, after which consultations will be held with the food industry, trade bodies and non-governmental organisations to develop guidance and timelines for the calorie reduction programme.
Philip Dunne, minister of state for health, said: "We all have a responsibility to help people live healthier lives, but with a third of children leaving primary school obese, we must take a comprehensive approach and now focus on excess calories."
The intention will be to build upon the progress made on reducing the level of sugar in many products sold in the UK over the last year.
