GP letters ‘can help to bolster bowel screening participation’

12th August 2011

Endorsement by GPs could help to improve the take-up of bowel cancer screening tests in the UK, according to a new study.

Research published in the British Journal of Cancer has suggested that at least ten percent more people would be likely to utilise home screening kits if sent a letter of recommendation by their doctor, as well as an instructional leaflet.

This conclusion was reached after analysis of more than 1,200 patients conducted by the University of Oxford and could help to bolster the current inconsistent participation in bowel screening initiatives.

This could prove important due to the fact that early diagnosis can help to greatly improve the patient's prospects of successful treatment.

Hazel Nunn, head of health evidence and information at Cancer Research UK, said: "The bowel screening test kit could save your life and we urge all those who receive a kit in the post to send it back."

Last month, data was released by Cancer Research UK showing that bowel cancer risk among men has doubled since the mid 1970s.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800698448-ADNFCR
