GSK announces directorate change

8th September 2008

GlaxoSmithKline (GSK) has announced the resignation of executive director and president of North American Pharmaceuticals Chris Viehbacher from its board.

Mr Viehbacher will leave the company at the start of December 2008 in order to pursue another opportunity.

Andrew Witty, chief executive officer of GSK, said: “I would like to thank Chris for his significant contribution to GSK.”

He described Mr Viehbacher as one of the most respected and talented executives in the pharmaceutical industry and added that the company wished him well in all his future endeavours.

Last month, the Economist published a profile of Mr Witty, exploring the chief executive’s three-part plan to transform GSK into a more successful pharmaceutical company and pharmacy supplier.

This plan includes an end to the drive to discovering blockbuster drugs, expansion beyond prescription-drug sales in the developing world and the promotion of dialogue with large drug purchasers, such as the NHS.
