Health Education England unveils new approach to assessing trainee doctors

Health Education England has revealed a number of changes to the way it assesses trainee doctors. 

It has unveiled a number of recommendations designed to enhance the process, including helping trainees to pause and re-enter training more easily, as well as more support for those who carry out assessments. 

The revised plans are the result of the year-long annual review of competency progression process, which commenced after doctors expressed concerns at inconsistencies in the assessment system. 

Increased uniformity is a central element of the new system, with geographical variations in processes eliminated and requirements kept the same throughout the training year. 

There will also be more information about trainees on how the assessment will work, how feedback will be given and the kind of support they will get. 

Executive director of education and quality and national medical director, Health Education England Professor Wendy Reid said: "This is about wanting to be assured that the system is fair and consistent across the country. 

"Our doctors in training don’t need a process that is overly burdensome and adds additional pressure to what is already a very challenging front-line job."
