Health minister discusses innovation funding

28th April 2009

It can be difficult for NHS staff to access funding so they can turn their ideas into reality, it has been claimed.

Health minister Lord Darzi made this comment after it was announced 220 million pounds would be donated to the public body to encourage innovation.

Each of the ten Strategic Health Authorities in England will receive two million pounds this year, followed by an additional five million pounds for the next four years.

Lord Darzi remarked he was delighted to announce the investment to get ideas going so they can help patients and medical professionals.

“The NHS is rightly recognised as a world leader in the development of innovative treatments and technologies,” he said.

“But we can be better at putting those good ideas into action and these funds will help do exactly that.”

Earlier this month, the Department of Health announced it would contribute an additional 2.3 billion pounds in savings to the NHS.

Health secretary Alan Johnson explained the finances would go towards providing better value for money and safer healthcare.
