Health secretary admits to ‘unacceptable’ problems facing NHS

10th February 2017

Health secretary Jeremy Hunt has described the many problems the NHS is facing as "completely unacceptable" following a week of reports highlighting the issues.

Speaking to BBC News, which has been publishing new details about the current plight of the NHS throughout the week, Mr Hunt said there was "no excuse" for some of the problems that have emerged, but offered assurance that the government has plans to tackle them.

Over the last few days, it has been revealed that the number of patients waiting longer than necessary for routine operations has risen by 163 percent in four years, while nine in ten hospitals have had unsafe numbers of patients on their wards during the winter.

Additionally, record numbers of patients have waited more than four hours for accident and emergency care, while many others have been stuck in hospital for months due to a lack of community care.

Mr Hunt said: "It is incredibly frustrating for me. I am doing this job because I want NHS care to be the safest and best in the world. That kind of care is completely unacceptable."

He added that a "big transformation programme" is underway with the aim of treating more people at home and in the community, while noting that many other healthcare systems are also struggling at present due to an ageing population.
