Healthcare leaders urged to prepare for European Antibiotic Awareness Day

21st October 2013

The Department of Health is calling on chief executives and directors of public health to get ready for the forthcoming European Antibiotic Awareness Day.

Taking place on November 18th 2013, the event is a Europe-wide initiative designed to emphasise the importance of responsible antibiotic prescribing, offering the opportunity to highlight the problem of superbugs and encourage those in the sector to take action.

Local teams are being encouraged to run awareness campaigns in GP practices or hospitals in their area, highlight the initiative online and through social media channels and encourage GPs to use the Royal College of GPs' Target toolkit to improve prescribing practice.

A Department of Health statement said: "Antimicrobial resistance is a global problem and a major threat to the future of healthcare – national and international action is needed to improve treatment, education and monitoring."

This comes after a study from University College London last month revealed that not enough money is being spent by the UK medical research sector to tackle the emergence of antimicrobial resistance at present.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801651772-ADNFCR
