Hologic contraception system marks milestone

8th January 2009

Hologic has said a "milestone" has been reached following the CE marking approval for its permanent contraception system.

The company, which was formed when Cytyc and Hologic joined together, announced this week that its Adiana product can provide females with a minimally-invasive form of sterilisation.

CE marking means Adiana can be marketed in certain European Free Trade Association member states and the 27 European Union countries.

"This is another significant milestone for Hologic and our GYN surgical products business," said senior vice-president and general manager of the surgical products department.

"Europe is a key area of growth for us and where we have a formidable sales and marketing infrastructure."

Adiana involves hysteroscopy and usually requires local anaesthetic during administration.

Hologic claims the recuperation period is a day or less, in comparison to the more traditional sterilisation method of bilateral tubal ligation, which necessitates general anaesthetic and can mean four to five days of rest following the procedure.

The company previously developed and created mammography, osteoporosis and breast care assessment products but expanded its brief in 2007 to include devices for radiation treatment and breast biopsies among other health areas.
