Hologic sells share of blood screening business to Grifols
Hologic has announced the sale of its stake in its blood screening business to Grifols, its longstanding commercial partner, for $1.85 billion (1.5 billion pounds).
Currently, Hologic and Grifols are global leaders in molecular blood screening and have been collaborating in this field since 1998 through their respective predecessor companies. Hologic is primarily responsible for research, development and manufacturing of Procleix blood screening products, while Grifols has taken the lead on commercialisation worldwide.
This new deal will see Grifols receive a fully paid-up license to certain Hologic intellectual property for use in the blood screening field, with approximately 175 members of staff – mainly in operations and research and development – transferring from Hologic to Grifols.
Hologic's blood screening manufacturing facility in Rancho Bernardo, California will also be transferred, with the company retaining the engineering experts responsible for the Tigris and Panther systems, while partnering with Grifols to ensure that customers will continue to benefit from the instrumentation in the long term.
Steve MacMillan, chairman, president and chief executive officer of Hologic, said: "Divesting our share of our blood screening business to Grifols will strengthen our efforts to build a sustainable growth company by accelerating top and bottom-line growth rates, while significantly increasing financial flexibility."
