Home cooking ‘healthier and cheaper than eating out’

15th March 2017

People who cook at home more often are likely to see both health and financial benefits from doing so, according to new research.

The University of Washington study interviewed 437 King County adults, who were asked to remember their last week of eating in and eating out. Home-cooked dinners were associated with greater compliance with US federal guidelines for a healthy diet.

By contrast, food bought outside was shown to be getting progressively less healthy, with the contribution of away-from-home food to total calories rising from 18 percent in the 1970s to 32 percent by the late 1990s.

The study also indicated that home-cooked meals were associated with diets lower in calories, sugar and fat without any increase in monthly expenses for food, while no evidence was seen to suggest that lower incomes led to eating more fast food.

Adam Drewnowski, director of the University of Washington's Center for Public Health Nutrition, said: "By cooking more often at home, you have a better diet at no significant cost increase, while if you go out more, you have a less healthy diet at a higher cost."
