Hospira first to offer azithromycin drug delivery system

30th June 2009

Hospira has announced its intention to offer a 500 mg vial of azithromycin, which is a generic version of the Pfizer drug Zithromax for injection.

Azithromycin for injection in the ADD-Vantage system will be available after Hospira received approval from the Food and Drug Administration.

It said it will be the first to supply this anti-infective medication in such an advanced drug delivery system.

“This reinforces Hospira’s commitment to healthcare worker safety, as well as to providing safe and effective generic drugs to patients,” remarked Joshus Gordon, vice-president of the company’s speciality pharmaceuticals division.

ADD-Vantage is a two-part system designed so professionals do not need to use a syringe and needle to mix the solution and drug. According to the company, this enhances workflow and results in less waste, as well as lowering the risk of needle accidents.

Hospira describes itself as the global leader in speciality generic injectables and in 2007 acquired Mayne Pharma.
