Hundreds more NHS jobs to go

30th March 2006

More job cuts have been announced at an NHS trust as financial pressures continue to exert their influence on the public health service.

In order to make savings in excess of ?10 million over the next year, more than 300 positions are expected to be axed by Brighton and Sussex University Hospitals Trust.

That equates to some seven per cent of the trust’s workforce, which covers five hospitals.

The decision has come on the back of estimates that reveal an end of year deficit of ?11.3 million, which in turn adds to a ?10 million deficit a year earlier.

Voluntary redundancies and early retirement will account for a large number of the job losses, but the trust’s chief executive could not rule out the possibility of redundancies.

The five hospitals run by the trust are Brighton’s Royal Sussex County Hospital, the Sussex Eye Hospital and the Royal Alexandra Hospital for Sick Children and Haywards Heath’s Princess Royal Hospital and Hurstwood Park Neurosciences Centre.
