Idexx facility to test for pancreatic lipase levels in cats

16th October 2008

Idexx has announced a new test to help diagnose pancreatitis in cats at one of its facilities.

A new blood test for pancreatic lipase levels was based on a pancreatic lipase immunoreactivity test developed by the Gastrointestinal Laboratory at Texas A&M University’s School of Veterinary Medicine. The laboratory also worked with Idexx on its development, Cat Channel reported.

Veterinarians will now be able to refer cats’ blood samples to Idexx’s facility in Maine and have results returned overnight.

The news source, citing the Merck Veterinary Manual, explained feline pancreatitis is difficult to diagnose due to its symptoms, which “are not particularly specific”.

Lethargy is found in 100 per cent of cases and is the main clinical sign, while dehydration, anorexia, hypothermia, vomiting and abdominal pain are other symptoms.

People looking at animal health jobs may want to look at Idexx, which provides laboratory services for those dealing with companion animals, livestock and poultry.
