Implantable medicine diffusion capsule ‘could aid long-term disease treatment’

5th December 2016

A new implantable capsule has been shown to potentially offer numerous benefits in the treatment of disease over extended periods of time.

Researchers from the University of Texas at San Antonio have created a drug delivery capsule filled with medicinal fluid that uses around 5,000 nanochannels to regulate the rate of release of the drug in question.

It can provide doses for several days or a few weeks and can be used for any type of disease that requires localised delivery of medication over time, making it especially useful in the treatment of cancer.

Most current automated drug-delivery systems have difficulty finding the right balance between providing the minimum dose needed to be effective, without accidentally administering an excess.

Lyle Hood, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at the University of Texas at San Antonio, said: "This way, we have the proper amount of drugs in a person's system to be effective, but not so much that they'll harm that person."

The capsule could also be used to treat diseases like HIV for up to a year, or to provide cortisone to damaged joints to avoid painful, frequent injections.
