Innovative Method Developed to Reduce Duration Required for Polio Identification

23rd August 2023

Investigators from Kinshasa’s Institut National de Recherche Biomédicale have demonstrated that employing DDNS to identify polio cases can speed up diagnosis and lower expenditures for health care officials.

To verify polio cases, specimens from nations with ongoing epidemics are being transported around the globe for laboratory examination.

CEO at MHRA stated, “By implementing detection methods such as DDNS, we can identify where outbreaks are and which polio strain is present much more quickly, allowing us to act at the earliest opportunity.”

Over the course of six months, scientists discovered that DDNS tests conducted domestically within the DRC were, on a typical basis, 3 weeks quicker than the traditional approach and had an accuracy rate of 99%.

The evaluation and verification of DDNS as a polio identification tool will continue to be encouraged by MHRA experts, who will also instruct WHO laboratories on its use.
