Intervet/Schering-Plough re-launches Equilis StrepE in Europe

3rd June 2010

Intervet/Schering-Plough is to reintroduce its Equilis StrepE strangles vaccine for horses across Europe for the first time since 2007.

The drug, which was withdrawn for stability reasons three years ago, has undergone further research and improvements which have helped to extend its shelf life and make it easier to administer.

It has already been re-launched in the Netherlands and is expected to return to the UK in October 2010 as part of a Europe-wide rollout which is taking place throughout 2010 and beyond.

The firm hopes that the revised vaccine will offer a treatment option against strangles, a highly infectious bacterial disease which is one of the most common equine respiratory infections.

Dr Roberto Ragni-Alunni, global technical manager for Intervet/Schering-Plough’s equine division, said: “The re-launch of Equilis StrepE in Europe is an important milestone in our efforts to fully meet the needs of our customers in the equine industry.”

Last month, Intervet/Schering-Plough announced the launch of the Slice Sustainability Project, a strategy designed to help salmon farmers manage the problem of sea lice.
