Job stress, unhealthy eating and poor sleep ‘are linked’

23rd June 2017

A good night's sleep can help to break the vicious cycle linking job stress and unhealthy eating, according to new research.

The Michigan State University research, which assessed 235 workers in China in stressful jobs, showed that workday stress was linked to negative moods while on the job, which in turn led to a higher rate of unhealthy eating in the evening.

Unhealthy eating can also be a consequence of diminished self-control, with these individuals experiencing inadequacy in exerting control over behaviour aligned with personal goals and social norms.

However, when workers got more sleep the night before, they tended to eat better when they experienced stress the next day.

As such, the researchers said sleep-awareness training and flexible scheduling should be considered for workers who are stressed, while food-related job perks should be dissuaded.

Study co-author Chu-Hsiang Chang, Michigan State University's associate professor of psychology, said: "A good night's sleep can make workers replenished and feel vigorous again, which may make them better able to deal with stress at work the next day and less vulnerable to unhealthy eating."
