16th November 2007

Johnson & Johnson (J&J) has announced the creation of three new units with the goal of accelerating growth and focusing on opportunities outside its traditional areas.

A new Office of Strategy and Growth will highlight growth opportunities beyond the company’s current objectives.

J&J will also form a Surgical Care Group which will focus on advanced technologies, solutions and services to improve patient care in the surgical area.

The final unit will be the Comprehensive Care Croup, which will create portfolios to address chronic and pervasive conditions such as metabolic disorders.

William C Weldon, chairman and chief executive officer, stated the moves were in recognition of a new environment emerging in human health and well-being

“They reflect our assessment of the best way for us to capture and develop the opportunities associated with those changes and they capitalise on the unique, broadly-based, decentralised approach of Johnson & Johnson.”

The Surgical Care Group will comprise of several J&J subsidiaries including Ethicon, Ethicon Endo-Surgery and DePuy.

Sherilyn S McCoy is also to move from her role as chair for Ethicon to take the position as worldwide chair of Surgical Care.

Earlier this month, J&J franchise DePuy Orthopaedics announced the launch of new software that is designed to significantly enhance the practice of computer-assisted knee replacement surgery.
