Joint approach is needed to tackle childhood tooth decay and obesity

22nd October 2019

The British Dental Association (BDA) welcomes chief medical officer Dame Sally Davies’ report which calls for a joined-up response to tackle childhood obesity and tooth decay.
In her final report, Ms Davies pointed out that children are ‘drowning in a flood of unhealthy food and drink options’ and wants to see children’s health put ‘at the forefront of government policy.’
Public Health England claims that children are regularly consuming more sugar than the recommended daily limit, which is costing the NHS £3.4 billion a year in treatment for oral conditions.
“Tooth decay and obesity are preventable, but there’s very little effort to join the dots on policy.” Said BDA chair Mark Armstrong. “Politicians have a duty to build on the CMO’s report and deliver a joint approach that will improve children’s health.”
