Lasers ‘could make dental drills a thing of the past’

13th April 2017

The increasing use of lasers in dentistry may soon make the use of drills in dentistry obsolete, and potentially make treatment less of a fearful ordeal for patients.

Reader's Digest noted that the use of lasers already occurs in some dental surgeries around the world, but the high cost of introducing them – over £25,000 each – and the fact that dentists will need specialised training to use them have so far restricted their roll-out, with between five and ten per cent of dentists in Europe using them.

However, the number of dentists using lasers is set to rise as more people are trained to use them and the benefits become clear.

As well as avoiding discomfort, they can also repair teeth without causing the structural damage that drills can inflict.

President of the International Society for Oral Laser Applications Andreas Moritz explained: "The surface of the tooth drilled by laser is better than a conventionally etched cavity.

"You create a perfect surface for bonding without destroying structures within the tooth."
