Lib Dem MP threatens to walk over NHS shake-up

11th April 2011

Liberal Democrat MP Norman Lamb has reportedly threatened to quit over plans to dramatically reform the NHS.

According to BBC News, the MP for North Norfolk – who is party leader Nick Clegg's chief political adviser – is upset at the "financial risk" posed to the NHS by the concessions the Lib Dems are ready to make.

There is currently a public consultation on whether to make a number of changes, including giving more budgetary control to GPs.

The plans have been widely criticised by medical professionals and opposition parties and Mr Lamb, a former health spokesman for the Liberal Democrats, appears to be of the view that this condemnation is justified.

He told the BBC's Politics Show: "The sensible thing to do is to test it and see how it works,"

"To do it in one fell swoop is very risky".

Earlier this month, think tank Policy Exchange suggested that the government has failed to win the support of GPs on the reforms due to their speed and scale. ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800494946-ADNFCR
