Life Technologies gives rights to quantum dots IP

15th May 2009

Life Technologies has agreed to give the rights for its quantum dots intellectual property (IP) estate to Zymera.

Biomarker discovery, in vivo imaging and biosensing applications are set to be improved by new self-illuminating quantum dot products that Zymera hopes to create using Odot nanocrystals – a Life Technolgies product.

According to the latter’s president and chief operating officer Mark Stevenson, the licensing and supply deal enables the expansion of the quantum dot technology portfolio through collaboration.

It is hoped the developments will reach beyond bioluminescence and fluorescence into new markets.

"The combination of Zymera’s technology with our fluorescent nanocrystals has the potential to create powerful solutions for the applied markets and other applications," he explained.

Odot nanocrystals are already used to detect targets in complex mixtures and study the underlying base of diseases by different companies.

Life Technologies is the result of a merger between Applied Biosystems and Invitrogen.

The company recently announced it had helped to equip global laboratories to assist in the detection of influenza A (H1N1).
