Life Technologies invests in Synthetic Genomics Inc

3rd June 2010

Life Technologies has completed its equity investment in Synthetic Genomics Inc (SGI), a move which will allow it to expand its work in the field of synthetic biology.

The firm will be looking to work closely with SGI founders Dr J Craig Venter and Dr Hamilton Smith and share expertise to further research into this area.

SGI specialises in the creation of synthetic DNA to modify cells and genomes, an area of research which allows for the creation of new vaccines, as well as having applications in biofuel development and food production.

Last month, a J Craig Venter Institute research project funded by SGI made global headlines after creating the first self-replicating synthetic bacterial cell.

Gregory Lucier, chairman and chief executive officer of Life Technologies, praised SGI as an industry leader “not only for its innovative approaches in the laboratory, but also for its ability to help industry convert that research into meaningful solutions for some of society’s greatest challenges”.
