Lilly announces ambitious new access to medicines scheme

Lilly has announced a new strategy to expand access to its medicines in some of the world's underprivileged areas over the next two-and-a-half decades.

The company has committed to a broad-ranging series of investments in people, medicines and health systems, with the aim of reaching 30 million people in resource-limited settings annually by 2030.

Known as Lilly 30×30, the five-year scheme will see $90 million (73.41 million pounds) invested into the Lilly Global Health Partnership to improve access to treatment for diabetes, cancer and tuberculosis. Half of this will come from the Eli Lilly and Company Foundation, with the remainder drawn from company funds.

Communities with limited resources in Brazil, China, India, Kenya, Mexico, Russia, South Africa and the US will all benefit from initiatives to strengthen health systems and local treatment capacity, alongside patient education programmes and collaborations on drug discovery for diseases disproportionately affecting people in resource-limited settings.

Efforts will also be made to optimise product delivery and packaging for these areas, while introducing innovative business models – including alternative product pricing strategies – to improve access to care.
