Lilly announces new alliance with William Sansum Diabetes Center
Lilly has announced a new five-year research collaboration with the William Sansum Diabetes Center in the US.
The collaboration is focused on improving the lives of Latino people affected by diabetes through enhanced research, education and care, with the aim of providing insights into unmet needs and aiding the development of new interventions.
Rates of cardiometabolic disease are persistently higher in this demographic than in the rest of the US population, due to a combination of factors beyond biological risk, including economics, culture and education.
As such, diabetes is more common than would otherwise be expected among Latino people, an issue that Lilly and the William Sansum Diabetes Center are looking to address.
Dr Dara Schuster, senior director of US medical affairs for Lilly Diabetes, said: "Through this collaboration, we will learn where the gaps are so we can develop meaningful solutions for the unmet needs."
Both organisations have a strong legacy in diabetes research, with Lilly being the creator of the first commercial insulin back in 1923, while Dr William Sansum was the first US physician to administer insulin in the treatment of diabetes.
