Lilly announces new changes to leadership and organisational structure

9th January 2017

Lilly has announced a series of changes to its organisation and leadership structure to better align the company to achieve its objectives for 2017 and beyond.

Christi Shaw has been hired to lead the company's bio-medicines business from April 3rd. Bringing more than 25 years of pharmaceutical and medical device experience to the role, Ms Shaw will succeed David Ricks, who became Lilly's president and chief executive officer at the start of the month.

From February 1st, the company's diabetes, oncology and bio-medicines business areas will assume direct commercial responsibility for their products in China, in addition to the US, Japanese and Canadian markets in which they already operate.

Lilly Diabetes, meanwhile, will host the company's human pharmaceutical commercial operations in the US, China, Japan and Canada, with senior vice-president and Lilly Diabetes president Enrique Conterno taking on the additional role of president of Lilly USA.

Meanwhile, its emerging markets business will combine with its European division to form a new-look business called Lilly International, led by Alfonso Zulueta. Dr Sue Mahony will continue as president of Lilly Oncology, while current Lilly USA president Alex Azar will leave the company.

Mr Ricks said: "The adjustments we are announcing today to pharmaceutical therapeutic and geographic business areas are designed to maximise the potential of our late-stage pipeline and newly launched medicines, while improving productivity."
