Lilly completes expansion of San Diego biotechnology centre
Lilly has announced the completion of a new expansion of its biotechnology centre in San Diego that will augment the site's research capabilities.
The $90 million (69.29 million pounds) expansion is designed to foster and accelerate the discovery of medicines within core therapeutic areas such as immunology, diabetes, oncology and neurodegeneration, as well as the emerging area of pain.
Following the expansion, the California site now offers a new technologically-advanced laboratory and an additional 180,000 sq ft of working space – an increase of 145 percent compared to the former facility.
The new space also allows for closer partnership between Lilly experts in biotechnology, discovery chemistry and research technologies, while also supporting external collaborations.
Additionally, Lilly will create a life science studio in San Diego to allow researchers to remotely design, synthesise and screen investigational molecules.
Dr Jan Lundberg, executive vice-president for science and technology and president of Lilly Research Laboratories, said: "Investing in drug discovery and development is critical to maintaining an ecosystem that encourages and promotes innovation. Our expansion in San Diego is a prime example of investing in a research success story."
