London gonorrhoea figures see downturn in 2016
Efforts to reduce the proliferation of gonorrhoea in London have proven successful in 2016, according to new public data.
A report from Public Health England has shown that new cases of gonorrhoea in Londoners dropped by 19 percent in 2016 compared with figures from the year before, ending a series of year-on-year rises in the capital since 2009.
Overall, sexually transmitted infections (STIs) fell by five percent in London last year, with decreases seen among most of the five major STIs, including genital warts and genital herpes.
This may be a sign that more Londoners are getting tested for STIs more frequently and are practicing safe sex by using condoms, suggesting that recent efforts to raise awareness of the threat posed by STIs are bearing fruit.
However, it was also noted that the number of syphilis diagnoses rose by two percent in 2016 – double the number reported in 2012 – while cases of chlamydia increased by one percent.
Dr Yvonne Doyle, regional director for Public Health England in London, said: "We will continue to work with our partners to deliver effective public health interventions to improve sexual health outcomes across the capital."
