Majority of GPs’ patients ‘are positive about their care’

A new nationwide survey has shown the majority of NHS patients are positive about their GP care.

The GP Patient Survey 2017 compiled responses from more than 800,000 people on their experience of healthcare services provided by GP surgeries, including access to doctors, making appointments, care quality and satisfaction with opening hours.

Almost 85 percent rated the overall experience of their GP surgery as good, with a similar proportion saying they were able to get an appointment the last time they tried, while 68 percent said it was very or fairly easy to get through to someone on the phone.

It was also shown that 91.9 percent have confidence and trust in their GPs, while 77.4 percent would recommend their GP surgery to someone who has just moved to the local area, and 72.7 percent of patients rated their overall experience of making an appointment as good.

Dr Arvind Madan, director of primary care for NHS England, said: "This survey shows patients appreciate the fantastic job GPs and the wider primary care workforce are doing in times of real pressure, with more patients having increasingly complex conditions."

However, it was also revealed that 11.3 percent of patients were not able to get an appointment – an increase of 0.5 percentage points from last year – while the number of patients unable to usually see their preferred GP also dropped slightly.
