Male birth control injections demonstrate promise in new study

28th October 2016

Birth control injections for men have demonstrated effectiveness in pregnancy prevention in a new study.

Published in the Journal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, the research tested the safety and effectiveness of injectable contraceptives in 320 healthy men aged 18 to 45, all of whom had normal sperm counts and were in relationships with female partners.

They received injections of 200 milligrams of a long-acting progestogen called norethisterone enanthate and 1,000 milligrams of a long-acting androgen called testosterone undecanoate for up to 26 weeks, thereby helping to suppress their sperm counts.

This contraceptive method was effective in nearly 96 percent of continuing users, with only four pregnancies occurring among the men's partners during the efficacy phase of the study.

Although a high rate of adverse events was seen – including depression and other mood disorders, as well as injection site pain, muscle pain, increased libido and acne – more than 75 percent of participants reported being willing to use this method of contraception.

Dr Mario Philip Reyes Festin of the World Health Organization said: "Although the injections were effective in reducing the rate of pregnancy, the combination of hormones needs to be studied more to consider a good balance between efficacy and safety."
