Measles warning issued following recent outbreaks
The government has warned people across England to make sure they are vaccinated against measles following recent outbreaks of the disease.
Data from Public Health England has revealed that cases of the disease have been detected in five areas of the country, with 28 confirmed cases in Leeds as of December 8th 2017, as well as 18 in Liverpool, 13 in Birmingham, seven in Surrey and four in Manchester.
All of the cases have been reported in children and adults who have not received two doses of the MMR vaccine, with the recent outbreaks thought to originate from individuals who have recently travelled to Romania, Italy and Germany.
Although the UK recently achieved measles elimination status from the World Health Organization, a threat remains from exposure to overseas populations where the disease is still active.
Dr Mary Ramsay, head of immunisation at Public Health England, said: "Due to ongoing measles outbreaks in Europe, we will continue to see cases in unimmunised individuals, and limited onward spread can occur in communities with low MMR coverage and in age groups with very close mixing."
