Medtronic and IBM Watson Health’s Sugar.IQ diabetes app enters live use
Medtronic has announced that Sugar.IQ, the app it developed with IBM Watson Health as a means of aiding diabetes research, has entered live use for the first time.
The first-of-its-kind cognitive app helps detect important patterns and trends for people with diabetes, using real-time continuous glucose monitoring and insulin information from Medtronic pumps and glucose sensors.
It combines IBM's cognitive computing power with Medtronic's expertise in diabetes to determine hidden patterns in diabetes data, as well as offering personalised real-time insights to help manage elements of daily diabetes decision-making.
App development has now been completed, with the first users of the technology now participating in real-world testing of the final release candidate.
Medtronic and IBM will offer a limited launch of the app to 100 MiniMed Connect mobile accessory users in the coming days, who will have the opportunity to explore the design and usability of the Sugar.IQ app and provide feedback ahead of the full launch later this year.
Annette Bruls, president for diabetes service and solutions at Medtronic, said: "Medtronic will arm people with diabetes with a unique solution that could uncover previously unknown patterns, while serving as a personal assistant that offers meaningful information when it matters."
