Medtronic cardiac resynchronisation tech shows benefits in real-world setting

16th May 2017

Medtronic has announced new study data that demonstrates the benefits of its cardiac resynchronisation therapy (CRT) technologies in a real-world setting.

For this study, the company's EffectivCRT Diagnostic and AdaptivCRT algorithm in heart failure patients was trialled among 335 patients who had received Claria MRI CRT devices.

CRT uses an implantable defibrillator or pacemaker to improve the pumping efficiency of the heart. Historically, they have not been able to monitor the effectiveness of their pacing stimulus, but the EffectivCRT Diagnostic addresses this by determining the efficacy of left ventricular pacing automatically.

Analysis of the new study indicated that this improved awareness of effective CRT can help physicians provide a more personalised approach to treatment.

Additionally, a large observational study involving more than 40,000 patients compared the risk of developing atrial fibrillation in patients with different CRT devices, showing that AdaptivCRT technology was associated with a 35 percent reduction in the subsequent development of atrial fibrillation compared to standard biventricular pacing.

Dr David Steinhaus, vice-president and general manager of Medtronic's heart failure business, said: "Our portfolio of cardiac devices and technologies continues to lead the way in personalised care, creating better solutions and improving individual patient outcomes."
