Medtronic elects new director

Medtronic has announced the unanimous election of Victor Dzau as an independent director on its board.

Dr Dzau is currently president and chief executive officer of the Duke University Health System and chancellor for health affairs at Duke University.

He also holds the roles of James B Duke professor of medicine and director of molecular and genomic vascular biology at the university.

Dr Dzau was previously the Hersey professor of the theory and practice of physic (medicine) at Harvard Medical School and director of research and chairman of the department of medicine at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston and chairman of the department of medicine.

He has also served as chairman of the department of medicine and Arthur Bloomfield professor at Stanford.

Bill Hawkins, president and chief executive officer of Medtronic, said; “Dr Dzau’s reputation and experience as an international leader in healthcare delivery, medical research and healthcare economics will be extremely important in helping us to address the company’s future challenges and opportunities.”

He added that the whole company is pleased with his appointment to its board of directors.

In July 2007, Medtronic announced that it had signed an agreement to acquire Kyphon for the sum of $3.9 billion (1.9 billion pounds), equal to the price of $71 per share.
