Medtronic launches new aortic aneurysm treatment in Europe

13th March 2008

Medtronic has announced the European launch of a new Talent Abdominal Stent Graft with a hydrophilic coating that aids navigation of medical devices to improve minimally invasive treatment.

The Talent stent, under the name Xcelerant Hydro Delivery System, allows devices better access through tight and tortuous arteries by reducing friction with the artery wall.

Katie Szyman, vice-president and general manager of the Endovascular Innovations at Medtronic, suggested that the Xcelerant Hydro Delivery System represented the company’s latest “innovative contribution” to the field.

“Combined with the Talent stent graft, Medtronic now offers endovascular physicians in Europe an even stronger option for their endovascular repair procedures,” she added.

The new delivery system represents the seventh generation of innovation for the Talent Abdominal Stent Graft which came to Europe in April 1998.

In previous trials, the Xcelerant Hydro Delivery System was shown to generate a 99 per cent reduction in friction compared to the previous delivery system which did not have the hydrophilic is coating.

Last month, Medtronic announced that its Nanostim Synthetic Bone Paste was now available in the European Union and other markets outside the US for use in surgical procedures.
