Medtronic launches new fixation system

31st October 2007

Medtronic has announced the launch of its CD Horizon Legacy Anterior Spinal System in the US.

The system is designed to assist with the stability of the thoracic and lumbar spine when performing modern spinal fusion surgery.

Medtronic has stated that the new system is intended to help patients suffering from degenerative disc disease, trauma, tumours and server curvatures.

David G Schwartz, an orthopaedic surgeon with Orthopaedics Indianapolis in Indiana, praised the features of the new system.

“The new CD Horizon Legacy Anterior Spinal System affords the surgeon a flexibility not previously available in other spinal systems for the treatment of tumour, trauma and deformity cases.”

This latest system builds on previous Medtronic devices which offer anterior fixation solutions for complex spinal surgery.

Earlier this month, the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) advisory committee recommended that Medtronic’s Endeavor drug-eluting stent was given conditional approval as a treatment for coronary artery disease.

Should the FDA act on the recommendation then Medtronic’s Endeavor stent would become the first new drug-eluting stent to be introduced to the US since 2004.
