Medtronic receives approval for Avalus aortic surgical valve

8th August 2017

Medtronic has announced that its Avalus pericardial aortic surgical valve has been approved for the treatment of aortic valve disease.

The company has received European CE Mark and US Food and Drug Administration approval for the valve, which utilises proven surgical bioprosthetic valve concepts with added features designed to enhance clinical performance.

Features include a supra-annular design to optimise haemodynamic performance and limit central regurgitation, as well as an interior-mounted leaflet and frame design to enhance durability, and a low-profile valve design, streamlined valve holder and a single, one-cut release to facilitate ease of implantation.

In the PERIGON pivotal trial, which involved more than 1,100 patients from approximately 40 clinical sites across Europe, Canada and the US, the device was shown to be associated with low rates of adverse valve-related events, high survival and improved haemodynamic performance at one year.

Rhonda Robb, vice-president and general manager of Medtronic's heart valve therapies business, said: "By continuing to collaborate with leading cardiac surgeons around the world, we look forward to bringing heart valve replacement solutions like the Avalus valve to assist in expanding access and improving outcomes for clinical and patient communities."
