Medtronic reports positive gender subset data from Endurant II stent study

Medtronic has announced new clinical data that demonstrates the strong performance its  Endurant II abdominal aortic aneurysm stent graft system can offer for male and female patients.

Analysis of findings from the ENGAGE global registry has shown that Endurant II was able to deliver comparable outcomes for patients of both genders over a five-year period in a real-world setting.

Looking at data from 1,263 patients in total, it was shown that similar endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR) outcomes were consistent for men and women, with comparable delivery and deployment success rates, freedom from aneurysm-related mortalities and occurrence of type Ia endoleaks, among other metrics.

This is an important finding, as women typically demonstrate worse EVAR outcomes than men due to differences between female and male anatomies, including shorter, more angulated aortic necks, smaller aneurysms, and smaller iliac vessels.

Daveen Chopra, vice-president and general manager of Medtronic's aortic business, said: "The newly presented clinical evidence from ENGAGE truly underscores this objective and validates that Endurant is able to deliver similar technical and long-term clinical outcomes between genders through five years, despite significantly challenging female anatomy."
