Medtronic starts international launch of Endurant stent graft

8th July 2008

Medtronic has announced the international market launch of the its Endurant abdominal stent graft system to expand the application of endovascular aortic repair.

The stent graft received its CE mark last week and the company plans commercialisation of the product by the middle of the month.

Medtronic reports that the Endurant system expands the applicability of endovascular aortic repair to an increased number of patients suffering abdominal aortic aneurysms.

It notes the new device aims to help patients whose aneurysms have short necks or whose aortas are highly angulated.

Prior to the approval of the system, patients with complex anatomies such as these would have to endure open surgical repair or watchful waiting.

Professor Hence Verhagen, chief of vascular surgery at the Erasmus Medical Centre in Rotterdam, the Netherlands, said: “This next-generation device has performed exceptionally well in the treatment of abdominal aortic aneurysms.

“The Endurant System has the potential to expand the applicability of endovascular aortic repair to more abdominal aortic aneurysm patients who have been considered especially difficult to treat.”

He added that doctors across the world are eagerly awaiting the commercial launch of this novel stent graft system.

In December 2007, Medtronic said the development of the Endurant system underlines the company’s dedication to the use of minimally invasive medical technology to treat abdominal aortic aneurysm.
