Medtronic to purchase Salient Surgical Technologies

11th July 2011

Medtronic has agreed a deal to purchase Salient Surgical Technologies, a leading developer of advanced energy surgical systems.

The acquired company is responsible for products used in the haemostatic sealing of soft tissue and bone in a variety of surgical procedures, with offerings including the Aquamantys system with Transcollation technology.

A value of $525 million (329.1 million pounds) has been placed on the deal to acquire Salient, a business in which Medtronic already holds an ownership stake and which is expected to see strong growth in the coming years.

By purchasing the firm, Medtronic will be able to bring new applications to its surgical technology offering and expand the functionality of products in related therapy areas.

Joseph Army, president and chief executive officer of Salient, said: "Salient's focus on improving patient outcomes and its commitment to having the best people in the medical device industry align perfectly with Medtronic's mission and culture."

This announcement coincides with Medtronic agreeing a separate $120 million takeover of Peak Surgical, a creator of advanced energy surgical incision technology.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800617666-ADNFCR
