Medtronic welcomes publication of new guidelines on cardiac monitoring
Medtronic has highlighted the publication of new industry guidelines that support the wider usage of its cardiac monitoring technology.
The new guidance from the American College of Cardiology, the American Heart Association and the Heart Rhythm Society has recommended the use of cardiac monitors for evaluating patients with unexplained fainting, a condition known as syncope.
This occurs when blood pressure drops and not enough oxygen reaches the brain, often due to heart-related causes. If left untreated, cardiac syncope doubles the risk of death and is associated with a six-month mortality rate of greater than ten percent.
Medtronic's portfolio includes products such as the SEEQ MCT System, a wireless external heart monitor that can be worn for up to 30 days to detect any irregular heartbeats, and the Reveal LINQ system with TruRhythm Detection, which allows physicians to continuously and wirelessly monitor a patient's heartbeat for up to three years.
The latter device offers exclusive algorithms for the evaluation of syncope patients, resulting in a 95 percent reduction in false bradycardia episodes and a 47 percent reduction in false pause episodes when compared with its predecessor.
Nina Goodheart, vice-president and general manager of Medtronic's patient monitoring and diagnostics business, said: "Medtronic is committed to bringing meaningful innovations that help patients lead healthier lives, while providing clinicians with the best tools so that they can efficiently and effectively diagnose and treat their patients."
