Merck and Baylor College of Medicine ally on vaccine research

8th August 2017

Merck has announced a new partnership with the Baylor College of Medicine to advance vaccine research and development for neglected and emerging infections.

The company will ally with Baylor and its vaccine product development partnership, the Texas Children's Hospital Center for Vaccine Development, with the work to focus on  bringing vaccines through development to deliver them to societies in need in an efficient manner.

Merck will contribute its expertise in process development and formulation, with its team working alongside Baylor scientists to optimise the vaccine manufacturing process to increase vaccine stability and yield.

Initially, these activities will target schistosomiasis, a deadly parasitic disease that affects millions of people a year in tropical and subtropical regions.

Udit Batra, member of Merck's executive board and chief executive officer for life science, said: "The alliance with Baylor College of Medicine, one of the premier research institutions in the world, is the ideal partnership to advance vaccine development and manufacturing. Together, we will support the fight against infectious diseases."

This follows on from a recent public-private partnership between Merck, the Australian Institute of Tropical Health and Medicine and Baylor which also focuses on neglected disease research.
