Merck announces strategic plan at briefing

12th December 2008

Merck has outlined its long-term prospects at its 2008 annual business briefing.

The meeting also saw the company announce proposed improvements in how it develops and markets vaccines and medicines worldwide.

Presented by Merck’s chairman, president and chief executive officer Richard Clark, the briefing also provided new details of the company’s near and long-term strategic goals.

“Next year will continue to be a period of fundamental transformation that establishes Merck as a different competitor,” Mr Clark told investors.

He added: “We look to emerge leaner and more responsive to our customers’ needs ? thanks to ? scientific innovation.”

Last week, Merck was told its cervical cancer vaccine Gardasil has been found to uncommonly produce allergic reactions.

The statement follows research which involved 25 females aged between 12 and 26 with suspected hypersensitivity to the jab – according to an article by Sharon Choo of the Royal Children’s Hospital in Melbourne, Australia and colleagues.

Published in the British Medical Journal, it went on to say 380,000 doses were administered under the programme, with skin tests revealing three of the 25 subjects experienced probable reactions to the injections.

Established in 1891, Merck has 59,800 employees around the world.
