Merck Millipore provides donation to MIT to support Ebola research

14th August 2015

Merck Millipore has announced that it will be making a charitable contribution to the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to support its Ebola research.

The $50,000 (31,940 pounds) donation will support the development of a novel diagnostic and tracking platform for Ebola, a project that is being overseen by MIT professor Lee Gehrke.

It aims to create a rapid and inexpensive test that allows for multiplexed detection of disease and prognostic markers. Virus and disease progression markers are detected using multicolored silver nanoparticles attached to antibodies.

The resulting coloured bands can be read on a cell phone and uploaded to a server via an application, allowing health workers to monitor the spread of diseases in real time.

Udit Batra, president and chief executive officer of Merck Millipore, said: "Our collaboration with Professor Gehrke's lab is an example of the industry-academia partnerships that will deliver the life science breakthroughs of the future."

This comes after the firm announced a new collaboration with Celares last month to provide pegylation services to customers developing protein-based therapeutics and biosimilars.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-801797717-ADNFCR
