Merck Serono awards grants to fertility research projects

7th July 2011

Merck Serono has presented grants of up to one million euros (895,300 pounds) to five innovative research programmes in the field of fertility.

Via its Grant for Fertility Innovation scheme, the company assessed 55 applications from 14 countries and allocated funding based on the benefits, scientific rationale, feasibility and utility of the proposed research.

Among the recipients was a project led by Professor Nick Macklon at the University of Southampton into the role of endometrial gene expression in fertility, while researchers based in Portugal, Italy, Spain and the Netherlands were also awarded money.

Dr Bharat Tewarie, senior vice-president for the fertility and metabolic endocrinology global business unit at Merck Serono, said the firm will be offering a similar grant scheme next year.

"This initiative represents an unprecedented commitment from Merck Serono to encourage innovative thinking among the scientific community in the fertility area," he said.

Earlier this week, the company received regulatory clearance to launch three new pen injector-based fertility treatments in Europe.ADNFCR-8000103-ID-800614315-ADNFCR
