Merck Serono to collaborate on neurodegenerative disease research

Merck Serono is to collaborate with a leading European academic institution in order to further research efforts in the field of neurodegenerative diseases.

The pharmaceutical company will ally on the initiative with the Institute of Experimental Neurology and the Department of Neurology of the San Raffaele Scientific Institute in Milan, with which it has maintained a relationship since 2004.

Under the terms of the partnership, the institute will provide its expertise in assisting Merck Serono's evaluation of the potential benefits of new treatments for multiple sclerosis and related conditions.

It will also see Merck Serono provide funding for doctoral programmes in this field.

Bernhard Kirschbaum, executive vice-president for global research and development at Merck Serono, said: "This collaboration follows our commitment to further build a network of alliances with clinical research institutions to ensure a constant flow of innovation into our organisation."
