Merck Serono to support International Thyroid Awareness Week

26th May 2010

Merck Serono is to participate in a public information campaign in order to support this year’s International Thyroid Awareness Week.

The company and its global affiliates will be organising educational sessions and activities throughout this week to improve understanding of thyroid disorders and the ways in which they can affect pregnancy.

According to a recent TNS omnibus survey conducted in Europe among 1,700 women, 58 per cent of respondents were unaware of the risk that untreated thyroid disorders can pose during pregnancy.

Bernhard Kirschbaum, executive vice-president of research and development at Merck Serono, said that this problem is often exacerbated by the fact that many patients mistake symptoms of thyroid problems for side-effects of pregnancy.

He added: “Merck Serono is pleased to provide for the second year its support to healthcare professionals and patients through this global information campaign.”

Earlier this week, the firm announced that it will be attending the annual meeting of the American Society of Clinical Oncology next month, where it will present data on new cancer drugs such as Erbitux and cilengitide.
