Merck Sharp and Dohme and Pfizer to adopt Corning Valor Glass in packaging

28th July 2017

Merck Sharp and Dohme and Pfizer have announced a new collaboration with Corning that will introduce a revolutionary new type of glass for pharmaceutical packaging.

Corning Valor Glass is an innovative pharmaceutical glass packaging solution that enhances the storage and delivery of drug formulations, offering superior chemical durability, strength and damage resistance.

Merck and Pfizer provided pharmaceutical formulation and manufacturing process insights to aid the development of the new glass, with Corning contributing its glass science and precision forming capabilities to help deliver the final product.

The companies have agreed to continue collaborating on additional evaluations and deployments for the new innovation.

Kenneth Frazier, Merck Sharp and Dohme's chairman and chief executive officer, said: "Biologics today are on the leading edge of scientific innovation, and Valor Glass represents a similar advancement in materials science: glass that is purpose-built for medicines and vaccines."

This collaboration will result in Corning creating up to 4,000 new high-tech jobs in the US to help develop the technology further.
