Merck Sharp and Dohme supports expansion of aid programme in Vietnam and India
Merck Sharp and Dohme has pledged to support the expansion of an aid programme dedicated to broadening access to specialty care in Vietnam and India.
The company, through its philanthropic Merck Foundation, is partnering with the Extension for Community Healthcare Outcomes (ECHO) Institute at the University of New Mexico Health Sciences Center in order to help expand the Project ECHO scheme.
A grant of $7 million (5.55 million pounds) will be allocated over five years to support Project ECHO's aim of improving access to specialty care for complex, chronic conditions – such as hepatitis C, HIV, tuberculosis, diabetes and mental illness – in underserved Indian and Vietnamese communities.
The project operates a telementoring model that links expert specialists with primary care providers through virtual clinics, offering mentorship and knowledge sharing through case-based learning and guided practice.
Dr Julie Gerberding, chief patient officer for Merck Sharp and Dohme and chief executive officer of the Merck Foundation, said: "Project ECHO will help to make a meaningful impact on patients living with chronic conditions in India and Vietnam by empowering local providers with the specialised medical knowledge they need."
